With more and more new cutting-edge drugs emerging, the standard treatment paradigm for breast cancer is now rapidly changing, and the future is looking brighter for patients.

Recent findings show that the use of cutting-edge immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy (referred to as immunotherapy in this article) has increased rapidly over the past decade in the population of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but the survival benefit is more pronounced in younger people than in older people, who have limited survival benefit with this therapy.

The US FDA has approved pablizumab (Keytruda) as an adjuvant treatment for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. In the trial, pablizumab (Keytruda) significantly prolonged cancer-free survival in patients compared to placebo.

Recently, the European Commission has approved cemiplimab-rwlc (Libtayo), manufactured by US-based Regeneron, as a monotherapy for the treatment of adult patients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer whose disease has progressed during or after platinum-containing chemotherapy. The results of the trial showed that this therapy significantly improved patient survival and had a good safety profile.

Results from a pivotal phase 3 trial show that the PD-1 therapy Keytruda, in combination with chemotherapy, significantly improves survival in patients with advanced gastric cancer and has a favorable safety profile. Patients benefited regardless of their PD-L1 expression.

Recently, the US FDA has granted orphan drug status to two new therapeutics in a row.
